Abstract

If the definition of the so-called machinability is simplified, a rather scientific treatment of machinability is possible. The experiment to be described reveals that machinability of a metal in terms of chip formation, which is one of the most important aspects, is closely related to the ratio of the shearing strain to the shearing stress near the fracture point of the shearing-test curve of the metal. The larger the ratio, the poorer the machinability from the viewpoint of chip formation.
