An analysis is presented of the process of vibratory drilling, based on the assumption that the load presented by the bit vibrating on the rock to the vibration generator, a magnetostriction transducer, can be represented by a force-displacement characteristic with hysteresis. The conclusions reached are compared with experimental observations on the performance of vibratory drilling systems.
