Thermal Buckling and Frictional Effects on Postbuckling Behavior of Sealed Electric Motor Liners

Abstract

Thermal buckling and postbuckling behavior of cylindrical liners for canned electric motors have been investigated. It is shown that if an initial circumferential eccentricity exists, a short axial buckle at the eccentricity will be the preferred form of buckling. The temperature required to buckle the can has been found in terms of the can geometry, material, and initial eccentricity. The postbuckling behavior is governed by frictional forces which change the buckling from an abrupt to a gradual process. Deformations are dependent on the postbuckling temperature.
