Theoretical Aspects of High-Speed Shear in Face Centered Cubic Metals

Abstract

A theoretical analysis of the high-speed shear in chip formation is based on a simplified model of the flow zone. Formulas for the shear stress and strain rate are developed. The data available from the tests on copper and aluminum specimens are analyzed considering the initial workpiece temperatures in the range of −326 F (80 K) to 550 F (560 K) and the specimen purity. Dislocation interactions and initial hardness influence on the maximum shear stress are discussed and evaluated. A companion paper contains metal-cutting data on which this analysis is based.
